Observing Rockstar Through a Different Lens

So the largest gaming company in the world dropped their trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6.

First off, people who don’t even consume video games most likely know about this franchise. That’s how massive Rockstar’s reach is. But  being around animators, 3D modelers, rigging, texture artists, environment artist’s look at these Grand Theft Auto trailers through a different lens.

From my perspective as an animator I’d like to share with you an important detail that you may not notice as a viewer, and that is dynamic cameras. You see, having a static camera that pans in or out gives a “CG” feel which is very boring in most cases, but once you start layering in complex camera movement as if someone is  “holding a camera” that is when the sense of realism is created. The trick I typically use when framing shots is to remember the camera operator  doesn’t know how the character will react, which will give the scene a “cinematic feel”.

I felt the need to share, because the audience might learn something about what goes into creating believability. Next time you’re playing a video game, keep an eye out for the camera movement.
